About Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Dallas-Fort Worth, TX Intensive Outpatient Rehab Programs (IOPs)

Our IOP near Dallas & Forth Worth, TX offers patients the ability to continue on the path to recovery while residing outside of the treatment facility. Learn more about how the IOP fits into the Greenhouse continuum of care below.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Outdoor space at Greenhouse Treatment Center

An intensive outpatient addiction treatment program (IOP) allows patients to live at home while attending structured substance abuse treatment part-time. An IOP is ideal for people who do not require 24-hour medical supervision but who need more support than a standard outpatient rehab program provides.1

When deciding between inpatient or outpatient rehab, patients may choose to enter an IOP immediately if they don’t need medical detox from drugs or alcohol. Patients who have already completed another form of addiction treatment, such as detox or inpatient rehab, may also choose to “step down” to an IOP as they make progress in their recovery.1

Because IOPs involve a relatively intensive treatment schedule without the requirement of living at a facility 24/7, IOPs may be a good choice for those who are employed or have many obligations to attend to at home.

In the intensive outpatient program (IOP) at our rehab facility near Dallas and Fort Worth, you’ll meet for sessions 3-5 days a week for at least 3 hours at a time. Sessions may include:

  • Group therapy.
  • Psychoeducation.
  • 12-Step peer support meetings.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may also be utilized to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms during rehab and beyond.2

Our sober living residence is available to those participating in our PHP or IOP program, and we will provide transporation to and from treatment to residents.  We offer financial assistance to help cover the cost of sober living for qualified individuals. To learn more and apply, call .

In our outpatient rehab program near Dallas, your addiction treatment team will also help you develop a plan for when you transfer out of intensive treatment so that you may continue to build on and maintain the skills you need for long-term sobriety.

Intensive Outpatient Rehab vs Standard Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Both IOP and standard outpatient rehab can be valuable tools in recovery. Both use many of the same therapeutic techniques, psychoeducation, and peer support methods. One of the differences between an intensive outpatient and a standard outpatient program is the amount of time spent in treatment each week.1

Standard outpatient care may involve less than 9 hours of treatment per week and typically refers to outpatient therapy scheduled as needed, while intensive outpatient programs involve a minimum of 9 hours per week in 3-hour sessions or more.1

IOPs are a critical part of the continuum of care and have been found to be as effective as inpatient treatment for most patients.1

Both intensive outpatient and standard outpatient addiction treatment are less intensive than the highest level of outpatient care, partial hospitalization programs (PHPs). This level of care typically involves attending 6-8 hours of on-site treatment a day for up to 5 days a week. Services in a PHP are very similar to those in inpatient rehab, with the main difference being that the patient resides at home or a sober living community.

What Happens After An Intensive Outpatient Program?

What happens after intensive outpatient addiction rehab depends on each person’s individual needs. There are many options to choose from to ensure a person’s recovery journey continues.

Some patients will find they need extra support and move up to a more intensive program, while others may transition into a lower form of care. At our addiction treatment facility near Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, our IOP is our lowest-intensity form of addiction treatment. Our care continuum spans from from detox and inpatient drug and alcohol rehab to outpatient (PHP/IOP) and sober living.

Our IOP rehab facility near Dallas prepares patients to transition out of an intensive treatment program with full support. Aftercare planning begins on Day 1 so that all patients have a plan to act on right when their IOP ends.

A rehab aftercare program can help program alumni maintain focus and benefit from the support of peers. Aftercare covers a range of different programs, from staying in a sober-living facility to attending weekly 12-Step meetings to moving into another form of treatment when needed.

The staff at Greenhouse Treatment Center will work with all IOP participants to outline actionable steps to take upon leaving the program, offering therapist-led aftercare programs, relapse prevention services, and helping create connections with local 12-Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or (NA).
