Addiction Treatment Covered by Humana Insurance

Humana offers a wide variety of plans to meet the unique needs of each of its members. In addition to general health services, Humana insurance may also provide treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.

If you live in Texas, finding a rehab in your area that is in-network with Humana should be relatively easy.

Does Humana Cover Substance Abuse Treatment?

Yes. Humana insurance plans cover addiction treatment to varying degrees, and your behavioral health coverage should be equivalent to your medical/surgical coverage.1 The amount of coverage will depend on which particular Humana plan you have and the facility you choose for treatment.

Several factors determine what addiction treatment and rehab services Humana will cover, including:

  • The type of insurance plan you have.
  • Where you are seeking treatment.
  • The type of treatment being sought out.

Using Humana Insurance to Pay for Rehab

All addiction-related services and treatments you receive must be deemed medically necessary in order for treatment to be covered by your Humana insurance policy. In most cases, pre-authorization must be granted before specialized services (like addiction treatment) are conducted. During the pre-authorization process, Humana ensures the service is both covered by your plan and is medically necessary to treat your substance use disorder. 2 In-network treatment providers will be able to obtain pre-authorization from Humana for you before you begin treatment.

How Much Does Addiction Treatment Cost with Humana Insurance?

The cost of addiction treatment varies widely, depending on a few different factors, including:

  • The kinds of addiction treatment you are accessing.
  • Whether the rehab center is in-network or out-of-network with Humana.
  • The duration of treatment.

Humana will provide at least some coverage for rehab, but you will likely have some out-of-pocket expenses. These generally include co-payments, annual deductibles, and co-insurance rates, depending on your insurance policy.

A co-pay is a set amount that is paid at the time you receive certain health services (e.g., $20 for a doctor’s visit). It is common for a co-pay to be owed for each visit to an outpatient clinic or to fill a prescription.3

Most Humana members will also need to first meet a deductible before insurance coverage begins. Depending on your policy, your deductible will vary. Once your annual deductible is met, your insurance coverage will kick in to help pay the rest of the costs of treatment.4

After you meet your deductible, you may have to pay a co-insurance percentage of the total cost of treatment, while your insurer covers the rest. For example, if your co-insurance rate is 20% for an inpatient rehab stay, Humana will cover the remaining 80% of expenses.5

That said, most insurance policies have a yearly maximum for out-of-pocket expenses; once this amount is reached each year, insurance will cover 100% of additional eligible out-of-pocket medical costs for the remainder of the plan year. 6

Information on how your annual deductible, co-payments, co-insurance rate, and out-of-pocket maximum applies to addiction treatment under your specific Humana plan can be found in your Summary of Coverage and Benefits. You can also call the number on the back of your member ID card at any time with questions.

If you’re uninsured or worried about the costs of treatment, there are a number of ways to help cover your out-of-pocket expenses, including loans, scholarships, payment plans, and fundraising/crowdfunding. If you’re not sure where to start, the staff at Greenhouse Treatment Center will work with you to explore other payment options.
