Celebrating Pride Month in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Area

As we head into the final week of June, Pride Month is still in full swing. This month is about proudly celebrating the gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, or questioning community and honoring their struggles for equal rights.

Pride Month is also a time to shed more light on issues that uniquely affect the LGBTQ+ community. One example is substance use and addiction; problematic substance use disproportionately affects LGBTQ+ individuals due to several factors. LGBTQ+ community members often face harassment, social stigma, and discrimination that put them at a higher risk for substance use disorders.

When compared to straight adults, data from 2022 found that gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults report higher rates of binge drinking, marijuana use, opioid misuse, illicit drug use, and mental illness. The data also showed a higher likelihood of substance use disorder among gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults than their heterosexual counterparts.

Despite a greater risk of having a substance use disorder, as few as 1% of gay, lesbian, or bisexual adults seek treatment.
