Types of Addiction Treatment Covered by Magellan Insurance

Typically, the recovery process begins with detox and is followed by inpatient or outpatient rehab. During detox, you’ll get the support that you need to help you through the withdrawal process. If you proceed to inpatient treatment, you’ll live at a treatment facility as you develop the skills necessary to stay sober. If you go to outpatient treatment, you’ll be able to sleep at home while attending treatment at a hospital or recovery facility.

Your Magellan addiction treatment coverage may offer several types of addiction treatment, including:3

  • Medical detox: During this phase of treatment, you’ll receive support, medication (if necessary), and therapy to help you begin your sobriety.
  • Inpatient/residential rehab: Residential treatment requires you to live at your care facility, where you’ll receive around-the-clock care.
  • Outpatient programs: Designed to meet the needs of patients who are unable to attend inpatient treatment, outpatient programs may be on a by-appointment basis or may have a more intensive schedule.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs): IOPs provide a higher level of support than standard outpatient programs, requiring patients to attend treatment for several hours, several times each week.
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs): PHPs require patients to attend treatment during standard working hours, typically for 6-8 hours each day, Monday through Friday. PHPs offer the highest intensity of outpatient care.
  • Aftercare: Follow-up care should be ongoing for those who have completed addiction treatment, allowing you to continue to develop the skills necessary to stay sober long-term.

Cost of Addiction Treatment Using Magellan

Your healthcare provider, substance misuse counselor, social worker, or emergency care provider can help to determine whether you need substance misuse treatment, as insurance will only pay for treatment if it’s medically necessary.

Your Magellan insurance plan may require that you get preauthorization from a primary care provider before you’ll be approved for substance use disorder treatment. Make sure to find out if you need preauthorization before you begin the admissions process by contacting Magellan or calling prospective rehab treatment providers. You may be required to pay a deductible and/or copay, depending on your insurance plan.
