Back to School: Returning to Campus In Recovery

Summer’s end signifies many changes; one that comes to mind is the start of a new school year. For college students who have sought treatment for a substance use disorder, returning to campus sober can be a distinct experience from the one they had before recovery.

Here, you’ll learn valuable tips to help your or your family member’s return to college be less stressful and more enjoyable.

1. Line Up Your Support System

Going back to school can be a challenging time for anyone but it can be especially difficult when you’re in recovery.

Having a support system that helps you navigate college life can make a tremendous difference in your successful academic reentry while maintaining sobriety.

Each person’s support system may look different. Whether yours involves family, friends, or a sponsor, staying in close contact while you attend school can help keep you on track in your recovery.

2. Choose Your Class Schedule Strategically

A grueling academic schedule can translate to placing too much pressure on yourself. For your term back, be very honest about how difficult the classes you aim to take are and whether or not you feel equipped to handle them.

It may be wise to opt for classes that require less of your time and energy so you can leave room for other necessary activities that support your recovery.

Online classes are another option. This could mean a mix of in-person and online courses, or a fully online schedule if you need more time before immersing yourself in the college atmosphere.

Knowing what you need and choosing your classes in support of those needs are healthy priorities.

3. Stay Connected to Your Recovery Community

While some students may attend colleges or universities in their hometown, many others attend campuses out of the state or across the country. It can be beneficial to stay connected to your recovery community even when you reside out of town.

Luckily, many recovery communities offer virtual meetings. This format enables you to continue attending with the same group of people you have developed relationships with and who are familiar with you and your recovery needs.

Additionally, nationwide recovery communities offer meetings across the country allowing people to join local meetings wherever they are.

4. Build Stress Relief and Self-Care Into Your Day

It can be tempting to want to say yes to everything during your college years, from social events to campus clubs. However, protecting some time for self-care and stress relief is vital to your well-being.

There are both individual and group methods to take care of yourself. From daily meditation or taking a yoga class at the campus rec center to spending time with supportive friends, there are several ways to incorporate stress-relieving activities and self-care into your day.

5. Find a Local Therapist or Counselor

As mentioned about a recovery community, if you attend school in your hometown, you may already have a local therapist or counselor you can continue to see during the school year.

However, if you attend school outside of your hometown, it’s important to determine whether your usual therapist can offer virtual services or if you’ll need to connect with another therapist near your school.

6. Use School Mental Health Resources

Mental health resources on college and university campuses have expanded over the years. A key part of ensuring students are successful in their academic careers is providing them with the resources they need.

While student health services have long been a part of campus offerings, more robust mental health services have come about in response to high demand for them.

Connecting with service providers at your school can offer a wide range of support services designed specifically for your needs as a college student. Many of these services are included in your tuition, making them as affordable as they are appropriate.
